We're On Vacation!

It feels like an impossible dream, but we're finally going on vacation. No Etsy, no blogging, no social media, no cable tv...and hopefully, no stress!

We'll be back on Monday, August 29th. Until then, we'll be here:

Crater Lake National Park.

3-Day Weekend.

Station wagon photograph, from Jessi Retro.

It's a 3-day weekend, ya'll. The sun is officially out. Time to get outta town, soak up the rays and reset your brain. So take a camping trip, shop in a nearby town, go to the pool--in short, do something relaxing this weekend!

Road Trip Moment Of Zen.

A Trip To The Woods: Female-Friendly Camping Finds.

Vintage coral pink camping thermos, from Compost This.

Tree stump embroidery, from Miniature Rhino.

Hand-knit pom pom, from Tortilla Girl.

"White Tent" giclee print, from Gretchenmist.

The camping weekend--an essential road trip experience. Unfortunately, my girlfriend is a bit camping-phobic. However, I'd like to think that even she would brave the great outdoors if these female-friendly accessories we're part of the mix. Seriously, how can you go wrong with a coral pink thermos!

Rock 'N' Roll Road Trip.

U2 ticket stub coaster, from Blue Order.

"Elvis with Parrot" acrylic on canvas, from Aaron Reichert.

Print (from Radiohead lyrics), from The Big Harumph.

"Marina Towers" print, from Chasing The Light.

Many of my favorite road trips were inspired by music:

1. U2, Charlotte. A 6-hour drive in heavy rain. The best concert I've ever witnessed. I got so hot that I ditched my sweatshirt inside the arena. I also took a 2-minute leak in to an overflowing toilet.

2. Graceland, Memphis. A 15-hour drive that ended with an overnight stay in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches definitely helped our weariness the next morning.

3. Radiohead, Washington, D.C. A 2-hour drive (again, in pouring rain) that unfortunately ended in a canceled concert. However, we had the best 8-hour, Georgetown shopping experience the next day.

4. Wilco, Chicago. The cover of "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" inspired this particular (post-break-up) 14-hour road trip. My heartbreak was cured with a Cubs game, lots of beer, and the best hot dog I've ever eaten.

Room For Two, Please.

"Texas Motel" photograph, from Katya Laroche Photography.

Just discovered Katya Laroche's shop on Etsy. Lots of wonderful, road-inspired photographs to gawk at. I absolutely love staying at motels along the outskirts of small towns. A lot of times, the per night rate ends up being cheaper than what I pay in rent for my apartment! And at least at the motel I get cable...

Road Trip Memory: The Road To Gallup, 2010.

Rain, snow, wind and bright sunshine...all in a day's drive. Salt Lake City, UT to Gallup, NM--one of the most scenic stretches I've ever driven. We were hoping to make a quick stop at the Four Corners National Monument, but it was closed. Did I mention it was a 12-mile side trip from the road we were on (the same road that posted no sign of said closure)? Not bitter at all--just sayin'.

Counting The Street Lights.

"Lost Highway" photo print, from Catherine Nunnally.

Hand-painted, vintage train case, from Get Ready Set Go.

Map coasters, from Hands Workshop.

"Farewells Are Difficult" collage, from Living Feral.

As a kid, many of my memories from road trips past were the sights I saw while laying down in the back seat--tree tops, clouds, rain on the windshield, or even the occasional pattern of passing street lights. I wonder how many miles passed as I stared out the back window...

Road Trip Memory: The Oregon Coast, 2009.

The only thing more ridiculous than the beauty of the Oregon coast was Karl's "beach" shorts. But when you live in the Pacific Northwest, you're not really prepared to dive in any kind of water--so we'll let him slide.

If you're planning to visit the coast, we recommend Lincoln City--and specifically, The Ester Lee Motel, a cute, beach side motel with 15-20 cozy cottages. Relaxation achieved.

Road Trip Memory: The Badlands, 2010.

There's no better way to end the perfect road trip through the Badlands, than a fried "butterburger" from Culver's. Trust me though, you'll need to ignore the nutritional information or else it simply isn't fun.

The Perfect Day.

"Surfer Van" photo print, from Elgarbo Art.

Vintage 1980's German aviator sunglasses, from What The Funk.

Embroidered trailer, from Moxiedoll.

Cassette tape iPhone cozy, from Yummy Pocket.

You and your buddies skipped school that day and drove your brother's VW bus to the beach. Or maybe you blew off work and drove in to the city for the day. However you got there, your memories of that particular day are still highly revered. No morning bell ringing in your ear. No boss hovering over your shoulder. Just you, some friends, a little sun and some music. Sunrise to sunset, the perfect day.

Vintage Essentials For The Road.

Vintage gas can, from Jacks Red Barn.

Vintage Standard Oil map, from America The Beautiful.

Vintage AAA bumper sticker, from Bumper Stickers N' More.

Vintage brake fluid can, from Hindsvik.

It never hurts to be prepared! And if you're like me, you prefer to be prepared with a dash of vintage style. Imagine this scenario:  You're on your road trip. Your car runs out of gas in the desert--but you're prepared! You reach in to your trunk, pull out your rusty 'ol gas can, fill 'er up and keep on keepin' on! Admit it, you're feeling pretty cool in this scenario, aren't you?

Setting Up Camp.

Mini notebook, from Campfire Chic.

Vintage map paper ornaments, from Ink Whimsy.

"Trailer in the Trees" archival print, from Rachel Austin.

Vintage plaid thermos, from Cathode Blue.

Serious road trippers know that camping is an essential skill. Sure, it saves you loads of money. But there's more to it than that. Where else can you swap ghost stories, read a book beside the warmth of a fire, sip a bit of cocoa and set your eyes on a magnificent, starry sky?
